I think my placement fell short in terms of expectations, because I went in not knowing about PR. I didn’t realize that so much of the work was done in the office on a computer for 8 hours every day. Office culture was new to me. I also wish I had more opportunities to go and see events and see what people do in PR firsthand. Overall, I did enjoy my internship because I got to connect with great people and grow professionally. It wasn’t awful, nor was it amazing.

Global Toronto 1

Global News is definitely the place to be to put your skills to play. In one building, I was surrounded by industry professionals across all journalistic platforms and every aspect of the behind the scenes production. Each day was something new while bustling with the quick work pace, but from the get-go, the people I teamed up with for projects put their trust in me, and gave me real work to do.

Although my name and face was not tied to any of the published pieces, I went home each night feeling accomplished and productive, and many people throughout the office appreciated my contributions. Any time I created a comprehensive database for our investigative research, fact-check scripts, helped with editing and any other task I hopped on, I always received acknowledgement, feedback and thanks. An internship at Global News is a huge door to walk through, but it’s worth it.

Global Investigative 2

During my Consumer SOS/Investigative internship at Global News Toronto, I learned to be more of a journalist than I did in dozens of classes at J-school. I learned to refine my skills in pursuing subjects, interviewing, critical analysis, editing, writing and listening. I also learned practical skills in being able to use news resources, editing, timecoding and helping shoot and set up video for broadcast.

What I like the most from Global was that they never treated me like an intern, but rather as part of the team. They took my opinions into consideration and treated me fairly when I was wrong, as well as praised me when I did well. I came out with multiple clippings, the office was reached easily from my house, but I was not paid. There are definitely opportunities to pursue there.
